As we go to print with Off the record, Aspiring Law director Janice Hughes is making her way back from the United States after a particularly inspiring week in her Rotary role as incoming district governor.

Janice and husband Clayton Hope – who’s also a Rotarian – travelled to San Diego to attend Rotary’s International Assembly, a special conference for incoming district governors and their spouses from around the globe. Joining hundreds of fellow senior international Rotarians, Janice and Clayton were briefed on the organisation’s latest visions and also took part in several training, brainstorming and feedback sessions.

In July, Janice takes over the district governorship for the lower South Island, and will oversee the area’s 33 clubs. During her tenure, she’ll also implement a major community project, and is currently designing a significant fundraiser to roll out throughout her year, as well.

To catch up on her Rotary travels, catch this story in The Southland Times, and this one on page 3 of The Wanaka Sun.

As she explains in these articles, a key focus is shattering many of the myths about Rotary and lifting the lid on the phenomenal – and little known – work the organisation does locally, nationally and internationally. Few are aware of the many, and significant, benefits of being a Rotary member, either, Janice says – a trend she’s also pretty keen to continue reversing.

If you’ve ever been curious about Rotary, and what it brings both its members and our local – and global – community, feel free to touch base with Janice. She’s due back in the office on Monday. As she says, Rotary has easily repaid her 10-fold on what she’s contributed to the organisation.
